Chapter Eighteen

Helen was driving to work the following Tuesday when she realised that a whole week had passed since her devastating evening with Seb. Almost every day, Helen had reached for her phone to text him, but each time she had put the phone away. Sooner or later she would make contact, but for now it seemed better to let him get on with his move. She knew the split had been inevitable. And surely it was better to be single than in a relationship where arguments and ill-temper were the norm?

It hadn’t been a bad week, all in all. Helen had spent an evening with Anneka Mellor, baking fruit pies, and Susan had popped over to Sunrise Farm with Jack. Helen had turned down Molly’s invitation to a night of speed dating in York. That wasn’t exactly how she wanted to get over Seb.

The evening with Jack and Susan had been very sweet. She and Susan had shared some wine while Jack played with the dogs. He had listened carefully to Helen’s explanation that Isla couldn’t see.

‘We have a cat that can’t hear,’ he had told her, his face serious. ‘But Mandy helped us lots with looking after him.’

Helen glanced over her shoulder. Isla was sitting in the back seat with her nose pressed to the partly open window. Lucy was curled up on the front passenger seat. The relationship between the two dogs had resolved into some kind of truce, but surely it must be possible to do better for both of them? Mandy had said she would help, but between the split from Seb and a busy week at work, Helen hadn’t had a chance to follow it up. She would ask Mandy when she got in, she decided.

She pulled up outside the clinic. The weather had broken overnight with a dramatic storm, but the sky had already cleared again. Helen climbed out of the car, took Lucy into the cottage, popped Isla into a kennel in the rescue centre, then headed into the surgery.

Adam was behind the desk, tapping away at the computer. He looked up when Helen came in. ‘Morning,’ he said.

‘Is Mandy here yet?’ Helen asked. She should ask about help for Isla while she had it in her mind, but Adam shook his head.

‘She’s taking Abi and Max back to their mum’s in Walton,’ he told her. ‘Jimmy had an early meeting at Running Wild.’

The door between the cottage and the clinic burst open and Emily rushed in. ‘Bill Ward just rang on the house phone,’ she said. ‘Sable’s been hit by a car. I told him to come straight in.’

‘Is he badly hurt?’ Helen asked. Bill Ward had worked alongside Frank Conway as a postman for years. He loved his cat Sable as much as the Conways loved Jess.

‘He thinks he has a broken leg,’ Emily said.

Adam pushed out his chair and stood up. ‘Can you get the X-ray machine fired up?’ he said to Helen. He leaned over to check the appointment list.
